Controlled Burn videos

This video link is a great example to show someone who knows nothing about controlled burns. It also shows why it is important to have them.

This video is important because it shows what happens when controlled fires are not put to use.
This also is a reason why we need to make sure we have controlled burns, they burn the debris that would cause a out of control fire like this one.

My interview response

This interview was a little more exciting then I wrote it out to be. In the interview we did discuss a lot of important facts about controlled burns. Although Joan did give me a few good pointers about controlled burns that I will most certainly use on the field. This interview will help me out more than any of the sites I have researched. Joan did have a passion for firefighting and I could really tell with the detailed information she gave me. There is way more to controlled burns that just lighting a selected area on fire.

To be a fire fighter it takes strength, courage and devotion. Because firefighters are put through a very intense academy just to join the field of work. Once they have passed the academy then the heart pounding adventure comes at them. This career doesn’t involve them sitting around in a office writing up documents. This field of work has the firefighters out there rescuing people and fighting wildfires. Accidents happened and firefighters are the first on seen. It is safe to say their nature of work isn’t average.

Sonner, Scott. Controversy Rages Over Controlled Burns. Daily Courier (1997); 5A. Web. July 4, 1997

Part of a Firefighters job is not only to be a hero and put out fires. They also have to go out and make fires. These fires are called controlled burns and many residents dislike the firefighters for this reason. There are many residents in the town who believe controlled burns just pollute the town and that is not the truth. The reason these fires out set is to keep the forest clean so that one match doesn’t light it all up in one hour. The controlled burns clear out sections in the woods such as debris. One town resident “It seems you should have a rule against controlled burns or just not have them at all’ ( Sonner 5A). This resident is clearly one who dislikes controlled burns. “We typically do it in the fall. but there is a lot of opportunity to do summertime burning and stay with controlled burns and not cause resource damage” (Tom Patton 5A) This is one of the bad parts about this field of work some residents dislike the one thing you have to do as a firefighter.

Team work is important in the field of firefighting. Because it isn’t a one man job. There are many divisions that make up the team. For example the hazardous materials team is there to make sure there is no major chemicals and If there is they are the one who can identify them. This way they can also handle the with proper care. With out them on the team a situation can really go wrong.

There are many accidents out there that cause accidental fires and then there are controlled fires. “Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters” Controlled fires are a unique way of cleaning out the forest and the reason we have controlled fires is to clear out sections that have to much debris. To much debris makes it easier to catch the forest on fire. The good is we are cleaning up and the bad is the pollution.

http://www.firehouse.com/
This website is full of information about Firefighting. It has bloggs, careers and scholarship information. On top of that it has its own magazine. This webpage will help me out if I get caught in a bind and cant find any other websites. The amount of information it covers is spectacular; just on the front page there are over 15 incidents displayed. Then the site also covers a news and multi media page. This will be a great resource to look back at.

The blogg by Doug, Cline is very helpful. In the article he discuss how he has had a chance to visit many regions. To see how their fire stations operate. Well he was at each station he would take the opportunity to ask them if there is anything they would like to freshen up on. Many of them said they would like to touch up on the basics. Doug asked why and one crew said they had a incident where one firefighter was alone in the fire because no one followed the wall through the fire like their post to. This is important because if the basics are forgot a lot can go wrong.

The Mind and Body work out article. This article is pretty helpful in the field of firefighting. It explains how yoga can be a benefit of us. Yoga helps the body stretch its breath and be flexible. In fires this can be a big help because many firefighters are put in positions that they cant stand to be in for long. Also when carrying these heavy hoses and ladders a muscle can be easily pulled. With yoga this can be stopped.

Wikipedia is a great resource for anything. It is full of information that can be used in my essay. It talks about when firefighting earned its title as Firefighter instead of the old term Firemen and that is because when woman joined they couldn’t call women firemen. It also explains the important incidents that have happened in the pass that have struck are hearts with a dark sharp pain. This page really knows it all about firefighting.

In the future I see my self working in the Fire Science field. The reason I have picked this career to pursue in; it has so many rewards involved and these rewards range from saving someone or something all the way to battling vicious forest fires out in the wild lands. This field sends a real adrenaline rush to the head and causes people forget about themselves and save others. There are many brave firemen out there and so I strive to be one of them.
